The Parco degli Acquedotti

Parco degli Acquedotti. Rome – 19 January 2021

In these days when we are forced to stay indoors, when we can go out there is nothing better than walking in a vast park, in the green and getting lost in the skies in pursuit of the clouds and in the blood of the sunset.

Imagine taking your feet off the ground, abandoning the centuries of history guarded by the park and its ruins and flying, flying, forgetting everything.

(From Wikipedia):
The Parco degli Acquedotti is a city park in Rome, located in Municipio VII, covering about 240 hectares and forming part of the Appia Antica Regional Park.
The name derives from the presence in the elevated or underground of seven Roman and papal aqueducts that supplied ancient Rome: Anio Vetus (underground), Marcia, Tepula, Iulia and Felice (superimposed), Claudio and Anio Novus (superimposed). In the past the area was known as “Roma Vecchia”,Old Rome, from the name of the homonymous farmhouse.
It is between the Appio Claudio district to the north-east, via delle Capannelle to the south-east and the Rome-Cassino-Naples railway line to the west.
The park represents the remnant of a stretch of Agro Romano that originally extended without interruptions to the Alban Hills, and is rich in tree vegetation, in particular pines. It also includes a small lake that flows from the Felice aqueduct and that gives life to a stream and a waterfall that trace the ancient Marrana of the Acqua Mariana.
Although just 8 km from the centre of Rome, the park has been protected from development and retains a rustic air. Towards the South and East of the park crops are still grown and sheep can be found grazing.
The view from the park extends towards the Castelli Romani and the neighboring districts, but undergoes the frequent passage at low altitude of planes landing at the nearby Ciampino airport. It is a frequent destination for visitors and amateurs, who can enjoy extensive dirt tracks for jogging and mountain biking, in addition to the private sports facilities existing in the area dedicated to football, five-a-side football, tennis, rugby and golf. Agricultural and breeding activities still take place there.
