About

Stefano Romano has spent his time, for more than a decade now, capturing traditional life from many communities. Born and living in the metropolitan city of Rome, he has captured the life of many immigrant communities there, besides the people he met in his travels around the world.

He started photography in 2009, photographing migrant communities of various ethnicities in his hometown. Concentrating on portrait photography, his photographs have been published in various magazines and used as book illustrations and book covers. One of his photos was selected to be used on Amnesty International Italy's annual membership card in 2014, and three photographs were used in the Amnesty International Calendar of 2015 edition of 40th anniversary. Stefano provides photography courses at various institutions in Italy, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Stefano has held a photo exhibition in collaboration with "L'Albero Della Vita" and with Shoot4Change in Milan in May 2012. His personal photography exhibition entitled "Children of the World - Children Save Me" took place in November 2011 with the support of Rome Capital - City Hall VI. In 2012, his photography exhibition entitled "Cahaya Manis - The Sweet Light", curated by the Occhio dell'Arte, shows some of the photos he took in Indonesia. In March 2018, Stefano Romano again held his photography exhibition in Rome with the tagline "Sodesh Bidesh" in Tor Pignattara, Rome, showing his photographs for ten years photographing the Bangladeshi community.

Awarded The Knight of Rizal title from the Philippine government in 2015, he can speak English, Tagalog, and Indonesia. His books, Kampungku Indonesia (2016) and Sweet Light: Meraih Cahaya Melalui Fotografi (2019), are proofs of his passion and dream to preserve the fleeting moments in life for the sake of our future generations.

In 2018-2019, he was working for the USM Press in Penang, Malaysia, to make a photography book for the 50th anniversary of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Say It From the Heart #USMStyle (2019). In 2020, he visited Dhaka, Bangladesh, to launch the English edition of his book Sweet Light: Inspiration from 10 years Photographing Bangladeshi in Rome, published by Agamee Prokashoni in February 2020.
